A Real Doctor

Kendra in her gradumatation gear

Yesterday, I received my cap, gown, tassels, and stole thingy for graduation. I tried them on and realized that I look like a chess piece in the doctorate hat! Also, the stole thingy is blowing my mind. I can’t figure out how the damn thing is supposed to fit on my body. I even googled images of other people wearing it, and had two of my (non-medical) friends try to figure it out. I have this strange feeling that it’s perhaps the last test that I have to take before I become a real doctor. If I can figure out the stole, I have what it takes to be a doctor. If not, well, then maybe I shouldn’t have gone to med school!

Kendra - how the hell do you put on the stole!?

Let’s hope that I figure it out.

Also, I have officially graduated in the eyes of my medical school. They sent me an email today notifying me and letting me know that my diploma will be mailed shortly.

Here is the end of the email:

Dear Dr. Campbell,

Congratulations on your completion of medical school at RUSM and good luck in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Office of the Registrar
Ross University

Pretty cool, hey?!

Ah, that “stole thingy”, the envy of all doctoral students. To help out your searches, it is called a doctoral hood. I found a short youtube clip that briefly shows how its worn, so hopefully it helps.

Congrats Dr. Campbell! You look great in the gown! I hope to wear one someday. Go get some more oysters!

It is indeed a hood, and it comes from the first universities during the middle ages when students and professors needed them for warmth. And because the undergraduates sat at the back of the hall, they needed the fur on the hood (which is why undergrad hoods traditionally have fur on them). According to Dorothy Sayers (Gaudy Night), one side of the hood should be worn normally, and the other one twisted and pinned to show the colours underneath. Have fun!

sniff..sniff..you’re making me cry!!! I wish I could be there to cheer you on at your graduation ceremony! But then again, I am a loud Campbell girl, so if I yell really loudly from out here, a good set of ears might pick it up in NYC next month????
