I’M A DOCTOR! (Buy me an oyster!)
It is finally official! I have fulfilled all of the requirements to be a medical doctor. I won’t receive my diploma for a few weeks, and my graduation ceremony isn’t until June 4th. But for all practical purposes, I AM a doctor!
I’d like to take a moment to thank EVERYONE for all of their support over the past 4 years. I DEFINITELY could not have done it without all of you. I love you all!
Now, to the oyster part. So, I want nothing more right now than to go out and celebrate all my hard work and medical degree. However, I have one teensy weensy little problem. I’m completely broke.
I know this is going to sound totally lame, but it’s the only thing I could think of. I am asking for a donation. If you’ve ever gotten any good advice from this website, if I’ve ever made you smile, if I’ve ever pissed you off: I’m asking you to make a small donation. I feel really stupid asking for this, but hey, you do what you gotta!
So, I know this AWESOME joint just down the road from me that has a happy hour with ONE DOLLAR RAW OYSTERS!! Right now, this sounds like the VERY BEST way to celebrate my medical degree.
So, if you can donate even just one dollar to my pathetic little self, you can buy me a congratulatory oyster!
If you click the link below, you can easily use a credit card (or Paypal account, but don’t worry, you don’t have to have a Paypal account, just a credit card) to donate one dollar to my empty belly. There is also a description field, where you can include your name (if you like) and a short message (if you like).
When I eat each oyster, I will take a photo, and then post the photo, along with your name and message (unless you tell me not to) on my website for the world to see.
I hope no one hates me for this silly idea!
Anyway, here’s to being a doctor! And here’s to so much more learning to come! Thank you, everyone for ALL of your support!!

My name is Kendra and I am a newly minted doctor about to begin my residency in Psychiatry at

Congrats Dr. Kendra!
Congratulations! I’d donate an oyster, except I’m broke too. Enjoy the feeling of being done, for now!
We’re very very proud of you!
Congrats! That must feel great!
Btw, I wonder if what you’d been attending the last months was some kind of an internship (must be it).. if so, is it obligatory? Cause I heard obligatory internship for medical students is uncommon in the US.
congratulations, but the donation part is really lame. seriously….
[...] I’M A DOCTOR! (Buy me an oyster!) (islandmedstudent.com) [...]
Are you kidding me? Consider me someone who will never read your blog again.
Go buy your own Oysters!!!!
WOOHOO!!!!!! It’s been a long hard road, and you have shown us all what determination and dedication can do. We knew the day would come…so very proud of you!!
Thanks SO MUCH to everyone for your good wishes and support! That means way more to me than a dollar, anyway!
looking good there doc! i think blue’s ur color
Congrats Kendra….so happy and proud of you for completing the course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was looking forward to this day of you become a doc to write something inspiring and wonderful…instead i was disgusted by the donation request, and just to get you a meal…so turned off by you and your blog right now..it all seems fake. since you’re becoming a doc, maybe you should buy us all dinner ON LOAN…
Is no one else bothered by her asking for money?
You work so hard for four years and are so great to your patients and
the first thing you do is ask for money? So bizarre. Psychiatry is a perfect fit for you.
Dear Kendra,
Congratulations on fulfilling a stage in a lifelong journey. I would like let you know that those of us in the Ross community are inspired by your success. Numerous times I have walked in the cubes in the library and seen people reading your blog before the start of a long day of mediasite. I would personally like to thank you for all the amazing, straightforward advice you have given over the last few years. I wish you only the greatest success in your residency, practice and future.
with sincerest gratitude…
P.S. To others, please do not stain Kendra’s success with your insults. Many of you wanna be doctors have no idea about the trials ahead of you, and have this imaginary notion that it is six figure salaries and luxury cars…Thankfully those are the ones that get weeded out first/second semester
wow! People are so serious! Congrats on your accomplishments. Be proud and screw the a holes.
Kendra,
I am sorry that some people don’t understand your pain of being broke. Does not a doctor have to understand their patients to understand their pain.
I have read your blog from Day One. I remember, the resident that had you doubting yourself about being a doctor. I suggested for you, to remember, that you went through a Hurricane, and that had a lot more hot air than him/her!
I say the same about these few uncompassionate readers of yours. HOT AIR
Ask for $1 times 300,000 readers –No Debt. Ask for $10 times 30,000 readers –No Debt. Ask for $300,000 times 1 reader —No Debt.
Your just Asking? The government is sending you two BILLS.
Huge Interest/Loan Bill, Huge Tax Bill
8% times 300,000 is $2,000 per month in interest alone!!!
Good Luck Dr Campbell !!!! You Rock!!!!
Woohooo!! This is amazingly accomplishment you have here!!! Congratulations Kendra!! I wish nothing but the best for you in your residency. Yayyy.
Wow, some people can really be a-holes. Who the hell said you HAD to donate to her? And why are so many of you offended by it? She was simply asking for $1 to buy an oyster at a bar. Amazing also how you people like to hide behind your computer screen and just insult Kendra. If you don’t like the blog, then don’t read it. Also, if you have been following this blog for awhile, you’d know that Kendra is not one of those people who would blatantly ask for money. But c’mon, she became a doctor!! Isn’t that worth something?! Some people, seriously, gotta get over themselves.
Anyway Kendra, congratulations. I really enjoy your posts and I’m glad that you’re officially a doctor now. You deserve it after all the hard work you’ve put in. And you know what? I’m going to give you $5 so you can get 5 oysters.
Enjoy your first days as a doctor. I know you deserve it. And eat those oysters with pride woman!! ^_^
Go Kevi Girl Go Kevi Girl!!! I’m so proud of you and excited for you! How cool I can say my big sis is a doctor!!! I could prolly (yes my own cool abbreviation) write about 50 paragraphs about the negative comments some haters wrote, but why do I need to? It’s obvious they are jealous and have no bearing on you’re awesome life, so no need to waste time on them! You are an amazing person, sister and finally..DOCTOR!! I’ll buy you a whole plate of oysters next time I see you cuz I love you! wooohooooo!!!!
oh and cool pics and I think you should delete those downers for the record!
Hi Kendra,
I usually do not comment, however, I was incredibly insulted by the haters that posted on your site. I am an incredibly broke student at the moment and I wasn’t going to donate but, in spite of those ignorant haters, I will. Enjoy your oysters or blog hosting fees =P. I enjoy your site please don’t let a couple of ignorant people turn you off of it. After all if everyone was rational and kind, the world would be a boring place i suppose.
As Kendra’s only big sis, I have a message that most of us learned by the time we were in “Kendra”garten: If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything!
Congratulations Kendra–how ’bout I buy you the wine to go with the oysters instead??! Seriously, I do need your new address-and preferred method of delivery! LOVE YOU—now can you take a look at this mark on me!??!?!
Congratulations Kendra! Ignore the negative comments – I’ve read your blog from day one and I’ve always considered it to be a tremendous act of generosity for you to share your experiences. You’ve supplied me with a wealth of information and inspiration over the last few years to me, and thats well worth a donation.
Good luck with your future career.
PS. Love this picture!!! You look great!!
I sent my “Dr. Kendra celebratory fund” donation a minute ago! Please enjoy those oysters and possibly drinks (I have no idea how much drinks cost in NY). Have a great time!
Mean people suck. Thanks for writing but can’t afford it either. Kids, husband, and in med school too…
I could select a few choice words (that Nana didn’t learn in sunday school) for those who feel the need to rain on your doctor parade, but what if Bob and Daddy see it!!! Instead i’ll buy you all the oysters you can eat (which is probably a lot. I’ve seen you eat corky doodles special stuffed crust pizza like chesney bear eats a hambone!!) You def. def. def deserve it!!! Congrats Dr. Campbell!!! RAZZMATAZZ!!!
LOTS OF LOVE ALWAYS!!!
p.s. can you please take me to this magical place you speak of with hundreds of dogs running around!!!!
Congratulations Kendra!! Getting through all the years of med school- AND enjoying it too is an amazing achievement! I’ve been reading your blog for a while- and you are the most optimistic person ever! You have positive comments for almost everything
Wishing you the very best in your future- I’ve confidence you will be one of the best doctors ever! Have fun!
Med student from the other end of the world : )
Kendra!
Congratulations! I have read your blog for almost 3 years and have always been inspired by your determination, dedication, selflessness, compassion, hard work and lots of fun in medical school!
Thank you! I am proud to say I will be starting medical school this summer and will continue to refer to your archives for study tips etc.
Please enjoy a couple of oysters on me! It’s the least I can do for all the free information and inspiration I have enjoyed from you all these years!
Kudos to your entire family, Micah and ofcourse the cute dogs! who have supported you through all this….
I wish you all the best in your future endeavours! And yes…I will continue to read your blog!…
‘can’t wait to read about residency tales………….
