Vaginas Really Aren’t That Complicated
I just got home today from OB clinic. We had a wonderful lecture today by the director of ob/gyn. I’m learning that OB clinic is really not all that complicated. Basically, you just follow a pretty simple algorithm, and all is well. Always measure fundal height and the fetal heart rate. Ask about SROM, vaginal bleeding, contractions, etc. It’s not too bad. I have performed so many pelvic exams, pap smears, and G&C cultures, that I think I could do it with my eyes closed now. I am also a pro at finding the fetal heart beat and discriminating it from the placental sounds. I’m enjoying ob/gyn to the max, and I’ve found it to be an interesting, but not too complex field.
In other news, I’ve gotten a few more residency interviews, which is awesome. My garden has grown fabulously and I’ve been enjoying the fruits (actually, vegetables) of my labor.
My Spanish vocabulary is increasing every day. I can’t believe doctors and other med students actually ask me to come translate for them. My Spanish is really rather horrible, but when combined with hand motions, I somehow manage to get the message across (“dolor?” while pointing to breasts).
I’m tired, but very happy. I don’t see myself ever going into ob/gyn, but I can certainly appreciate it. And I am glad to have the wonderful experience, which will help me immensely in both family medicine and/or emergency medicine.
It’s time to water the garden. And walk the doggies. Adios!

I hate being a girl and getting pap smears … good luck with your residency interviews!
