Black American Food

Today’s pic is a sign hanging in my new grocery store, “Food Dimensions” which is a very short walk from my apartment. I saw the sign and realized it was the first time I’d seen a section of the grocery store devoted to “Black American Food.” Good stuff! Tomorrow the Internet fairy is supposed to visit my apartment…I can’t wait to not have to hang with hipsters to get online!

That’s only good if those food stuffs are otherwise unavailable at grocery stores. After all, it’s saying that Black American food is not normal food stuff and so shouldn’t be included on the regular food shelves.

Of course I’m particularly touchy about this because Black American food (aka soul food) is really just Southern cooking, which is what us North Carolina boys tend to eat. And while I’m happy to be lumped in with African-Americans (WASP though I may be), I don’t like it one bit when people suggest that cheese grits with shrimp is somehow a less acceptable food option than say perogies.

ps: In Harlem where I used to live, and in Astoria where I live now, grits, jerk rubs, collard greens and okra, black eyed peas and all of those types of food are available and included on the regular shelves. ‘Course we don’t have no hipsters here.

    Holypoo Dude. That’s nuts.
I walked 13 blocks in a downpoor yesterday. That is one of the many things that made me think of you.

Thanks for the comment, Tom. Actually, you took the time to write the words that I was implying by “Good stuff,” but was too lazy to write. You rock.

And Natezula, I loveya’s! And never forget the Kendragorean Theory, Wet = Happy
