Brooklyn Diet Coke

I have spent the entire day surrounded by people in tight jeans, stretched earlobes and moppy haircuts sipping coffee, espresso, beer and providing me with poor customer service. That’s right, I’m still in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, I won’t have “Internets” in my apartment until Friday, so I have no choice but to spend my time in establishments with free Wifi in order to get my Internet fix and to “take care of bizness.” Since I am in Brooklyn, this means I’m hanging out at coffee shops and bars.

This morning, Micah and I walked to a coffee shop to get some caffeine, brekky, and free Internet. The shop was packed with the hipster crew. At first I thought I might not even be able to get in since I wasn’t wearing tight jeans, but they did let me through. I then spent 30 minutes trying to get an espresso, a water, and an egg on bagel sammich. The barista appeared to be very stoned and at one point after he took my order he just stared at the wall for several minutes and then walked away, failing to ever return and give me my food.

After a few hours we left and came back home. We quickly realized that we still needed Internet to get our work done so we came back to “Goodbye Blue Monday,” the bar we went to last night. The scene was the same. The service was the same. The man behind the bar was also stoned.

Now I’d like to explain the “hey Micah” reference. In Baltimore, there were so many hipsters in tight jeans that whenever I saw one I’d say “hey Micah” and point to them. Eventually the phrase “hey Micah” just stuck and that is now our official name for the tight jean sporting, fixed gear bike riding hipsters that seem to breed in coffee shops and bars.

I have no problem with the hey Micahs, per se, but after a while they can just become a little suffocating. Their “uniqueness” is overwhelmingly un-unique, and it can be a little sickening at times.

Today’s Brooklyn pic is what I got when I ordered a diet coke at the bar. Of course, they didn’t have any diet cokes. Nosiree. No mainstream corporate, poisoned with synthetic sugar beverages here. Only “all naturally flavored” overpriced drinks flavored with sarsaparilla and gassosa. Of course, I actually like these drinks as much as the next feller, but it’s just the principle of it all.

Anyway, sorry for the crappy quality of the pic, but I only have my iPhone on me, and of course there is hardly any light in here.

If you want to make Brooklyn in words or film or paint, you must see the way the sun defines the silent streets on an early Sunday morning, sculpting trees, buildings, fire hydrants, stray dogs, and wandering people with an almost perfect clarity.

You can say that aspartame is not the best thing for your health, but calling Diet Coke “poison” is quite a stretch. As a medical student, you should know better.
