Family Medicine is Calling

Kendra at the hospital on night call

I just got home from family medicine night call. Wow, what a great night! So far, I am absolutely LOVING family medicine. I’ve learned SO much! And we are allowed and encouraged to pretty much do everything for our patients, including the H&Ps, procedures, writing orders, etc. There is a lot of autonomy, and that’s just what the Dr. ordered for Kendra.

I don’t know if it’s the fact that I haven’t slept all night, or something else, but I am really having some profound life-altering thoughts. Before starting family medicine, I was 95% sure that I wanted to go into psychiatry. But right now I am having second thoughts. I really like family medicine. It’s interesting and good and nice and well I don’t have enough functioning neurons right now to say much more than that. I really like it.

Maybe I will have to change some of my electives. Maybe I will have to change my life plan. I dunno, but I know that I’m really digging it.

Tonight was my last family medicine night call. The next two weeks I will spend in a clinic, and hopefully with a doctor who I admire deeply.

Life is good. Life is great. Life is wonderful. (Anyone get that reference?)

My bed is covered with dog urine, but I know I should go to sleep right now, as I have things I need to accomplish tomorrow.

So, good night world! I am thankful for awesome doctors. I’m thankful for kind and awesome residents. I am thankful for my wonderful patients.

Sweet dreams of large women!

That is the 4th time in a week that a Princess Bride quote has shown up in a blog I am reading or as a comment on mine. I would take it as a sign from the universe to watch it again except I already have this week. Again?
Glad you are enjoying family medicine. It can be brilliant.

    Hi Kendra,

I’ve been reading your job from my current home of Uganda and really enjoying it! I’m starting med school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and your blog has helped me get myself psyched up!

I’m also a blogger. You can check out my blog (about public health, Uganda, and increasingly med school) at http://www.heathaliketheweatha.blogspot.com. I hope I’ll be able to keep up blogging through my med school journey.

It makes me happy to see you got your MoJo Back! Even if its a little different than you expected…but isnt that why life is so exciting? Cause you never know what your going to get.

I think you like Fam Med so much cause its so much to do with people and you love people. (Just a thought)

Dont know the ref but it reminds me of a Jason Mraz song Life is Wonderful.

    Keep it up lady!

that is great. i have about a week left in my family med rotation now (i extended it for a week actually) and i am also loving it. part of it is the area that i’m in. they don’t have lots of specialists so these guys truly do it all. OB, peds, adults, ICU and more. they are true cradle to grave physicians here…..very old school.

glad you are enjoying it. get your dogs trained

Kendra! I’m so glad you like family medicine so far. Do you know if there are free clinics in brooklyn that med students can volunteer at?

    Hello!

Thanks for your comment! I’m sure there are free clinic positions available for med students, but I don’t actually know which ones they are. My school schedules my clinic appointments, so I have never searched for one. Good luck!

    Best,
    Kendra

I’ve been a lurker for some time, and will be on my way to a similar path this fall when I start medical school in the Caribbean (not Ross, but a smaller school). SO happy that you’re enjoying FM so far because that’s what I want to pursue right now. I love working with a broad range of people and want to be able to know how to do a little bit of everything… Looking forward to reading more of your experience :)
