Before and After

Kendra before her first surgery on call night I just woke up a few minutes ago. I have to be back at the hospital in less than two hours. I feel like hell. Here is my first “stuff learned” for surgery, along with a before, during, and after photo for my first on call night.

1) Life sucks.

2) The first night of on call sucks when you have absolutely no idea what you’re supposed to be doing, where to find stuff, how to perform exams that you have forgotten, and when the hospital is totally new to you.

3) Nurses can be your best friend, or worst enemy.

Kendra during her first sugery night call - 4 a.m.! 4) How to monitor a foley catheter, and record inputs and outputs.

5) Running around the hospital for an hour trying to find out how many bowel movements your patient has had in the last 24 hours sucks.

6) I hate getting lost.

7) What stage IV breast cancer looks like.

8 ) How to monitor an ICU patient. It’s a LOT of work!

Kendra after her first surgery on call night9) If you’re expected to use the EMR system (which you NEED for info), it would be nice if you were given a working username and password.

10) How to suck up to your residents.

Good night all. And thank your lucky stars if you actually get to sleep tonight!

I love this pose of you sleeping. It is the signature “hand cup”. Hang in there.

You begin saving the world by saving one man at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics.
