The Smell of Fall

The Gates in Central Park Today is the first day of October, yet it doesn’t feel like it. My body thinks that it should be getting cooler, leaves should be falling, I should be busting out my scarves, and it should be smelling like Fall. But alas, I’m in Dominica, and none of those things are happening. I felt this way last year at this time. I miss my friends, and galavanting around with them as the seasons change.

I helped my 11-year old friend Rennady with his homework today. It seemed particularly challenging to me for his grade level. I knew all the answers, luckily, but I’m not sure if your average person would, let alone your average 11-year old. Does the average person know the difference between a bolus and chyme? Or even what they are? The kids are just getting smarter and smarter these days. I can’t wait to tell my kids, “I remember when there wasn’t Wikipedia, and you had to use the card catalogue at the library to find things.” Though, by the time I have kids, they’ll probably have something even better.

The pic above was taken over two years ago. It’s me, my son Tom, and my friend Dav at the Gates Art Installation in Central Park, NYC. Aren’t they the cutest? Tom totally has my eyes.

    Kendra,

Thank you for doing this entry/blog on this subject. I find it interesting how seasons are in different places in the states/other countries as well.

    Mom!

    You’re embarrassing me.

Worry not. Fall is nowhere in sight in the States, either. Consider, for instance, the predicted high on Sunday in Chicago of 86 degrees.

So pissed. All I want to do is stomp on some leaves.
