Let’s Talk About Poop, Baby

I joined an unofficial running club a few weeks ago. My new running partners are totally the coolest people in the universe. Also, when I run with them, I challenge myself to go farther. Plus, these guys like running hills, which is way cooler than my lame flat runs. I can already see my calves getting bigger and my running partners are constantly having fun conversations, which makes it seem more like a social event than a boring run. Today’s run was absolutely amazing. We went all around the village of Penville, up and down the winding hills. I could try and describe the scenery, but honestly my words couldn’t even come close to doing it justice.

I’m going to figure out a way to start bringing my camera on my runs. I need to create some sort of rigged up fanny pack so that I can tote my camera around. I want to be able to share the beauty of Dominica with the rest of the world. One of my running partners took some pics today, and hopefully he’ll send them to me soon so I can post them. In the meantime, take my word for it: there’s no place better to run than Dominica.

I had a neat realization on our run today. One of my partners (hey, if you read this, I’m keeping it anonymous for you!) is going through some tough GI problems. He’s been vomiting and having some nasty diarrhea for a few days now. As he told me about it, I started asking him all the “standard” questions about the color, frequency, and consistency of his stools. He answered my questions, and the other partners, who are mostly all med students were asking him questions as well. I realized that I’ve always been interested in feces. No really, I think it’s a pretty amazing facet of life. You can tell a lot about someone’s health by their poop. Well, in the past, before I was a med student and hung out with a bunch of med students, when I would question people about the color of their stools, I always got a bunch of funny looks and people thought my preoccupation with their poop was pretty disgusting.

Well, now that I’m a med student, it seems that it’s much more acceptable for me to question people about their poop. I guess being a med student does have some really great perks.
