Sumi Masen, There’s a Worm in My Sushi!
We’ve been learning some really cool helminthology in our microbiology class. Today, we learned about a tapeworm that infects humans called diphyllobothrium latum. Apparently, humans get it by eating raw fish, aka SUSHI! This is one big sucker, too. It’s the largest tapeworm that infects humans and our professor told us that it can grow up to 30 meters in length! Scary stuff! Okay, maybe I will be more scrupulous about where I eat sushi, but I just can’t give it up completely!
My name is Kendra and I am a fourth-year medical student attending
Have you found sushi on Dominica?
I make the occasional California roll, but miss the real ones…
Yours with wasabi on top,
Jen
ugh, i remember learning about parasitology. it grosses me out, still. bleh!
No, I haven’t found any sushi in Dominica yet. But now that I know about the worm, I’m scared of making sushi myself! I’ve done it before, but I don’t know where to get wasabi here, and I must have my wasabi!
ewwww I new about bugs but I am not trying to take a chance of getting a tape worm…but get this…if your pup or dog has a tape worm…you can catch it!! and there is a new disease in dogs going around called Leptospira and it can be passed through urine..in puupies, rats, and squirrels..and humans can catch it!!! I am getting Jasibell vaccinated as soon as she is old enough! as for the sushi…I havent been able to afford it so maybe quitting it wont be soo hard!
