I’ve Got Ink In My Phagolysosomes

kevinryanback I just finished my third day of my second year of med school. I’ve been busy as hell so I haven’t been able to write down my thoughts in a while. I have a lot I’d like to write, but I have so much to study right now that I’m going to keep it short. In a nutshell, second year ROCKS! I didn’t realize until I started my second year how much my excitement level about med school had gone down since I first started. I really needed something new, and that’s what I got. I’m finally super thrilled again about med school. I actually look forward to lectures and am psyched about all my new books. I think I already mentioned it, but here are the classes I’m taking this semester:

Pathology
Pharmacology
Microbiology and Immunology
Behavioral Science
Introduction to Clinical Medicine

I REALLY love the fact that I’m learning new subjects finally, and even more excited that the classes are more clinically based. During my first year, I learned all about how the body is supposed to work. And now I’m finally starting to learn about what happens when stuff goes wrong in the body. This is the really fun stuff.

I’ll leave you with that, and will explain the details later. Here is one of the coolest things I’ve learned already in pathology: when you get a tattoo, the ink actually ends up in the phagolysosomes of your macrophages. I think I’ll use that as a pick-up line from now on. “Hey baby, check out the ink in my phagolysosomes!” Ummm, yeah…..
