Does Ross Suck?
Okay, so I know that I said that I wasn’t going to respond to any emails until after my exams, but I got an email today which was very time sensitive. Also, I had just drank my morning coffee and eaten my “Fruitangy Oh’s,” so I had all kindsa energy. Someone wrote me an email asking me about what I thought about Ross. They had read the (I would call them evil and misleading) forums about Ross online, and they wanted the real DL on coming here. Since there may be more of you in the same boat out there, I thought I’d share my response. Here t’is:
Hi Ryan,
Actually, I’m glad you contacted me. I do actually have quite a bit to say on this subject. I also read the forums before coming to Ross, and they scared the crap out of me! Here is the truth as I see it:
Ross is a good school. No, it’s not perfect. There are definitely some drawbacks, but all in all, it’s a good school with a good reputation that’s produced many fine doctors.
Unfortunately, there are some not-so-wonderful students here. I really hate to say it, but I have definitely met some students who I would be terrified to have as my doctor. It’s not even that they seem incompetent, but that they seem completely immature.
On the other hand, there are some amazing students here. There are hard-working, compassionate, incredible individuals who are going to make excellent doctors.
So, the short answer to your question is that there are both types of students here.
One thing that I’ve noticed is that the immature kids (yes, I call them kids) that I’ve met here are the ones who are doing all the bitching and complaining. Sometimes, it seems like they think it’s undergrad here – like they are being “forced” to come here by their parents. They bitch about how much it sucks here, and how horrible the school is, and they even carve things like “Ross Sucks” into the desks. THIS SCARES ME! This is NOT kindergarten! I am abhorred when I see this kind of behavior.
I am on the other side of the fence. I think it’s a privilege and an honor to be in medical school. But I must also admit, that I am a chronic optimist. When it rains for days here and the water has turned brown, I don’t complain to everyone that this place sucks, I simply take my shower in the brown water, and laugh to myself about it.
So, I guess my answer to your question would be, you need to figure out which type of person you are. I hope this doesn’t sound to harsh, but if you are a person who doesn’t tend to whine and complain about every little thing, and you really, really want to become an incredible doctor, then this is the place for you. If you are the type to bitch and complain about every little thing, then maybe this isn’t a good place for you.
It’s not the easiest path in the world. Actually, it’s really freakin difficult at times. But if this is your dream – if becoming a doctor is what you truly want in life – then you will work your toosh off, and you will do it.
As far as the coming here on short notice, that’s a tough decision. There are many things you’ll need to do to prepare, such as getting all your Visa paperwork together and taking care of stuff in the States. I guess that’s a call you’ll have to make. For me, I was so sick of my job at the time and not following my dreams, that I could barely wait to get out of the States. But this is a huge life decision, so you should definitely take your time, and make sure it’s the right choice for you.
A huge congratulations on your acceptance! I wish you the best of luck, and if you do come here, in January, or later, please find the girl with the crazy bright hair, and we can sit down and have a Kubuli together.
Best,
Kendra
My name is Kendra and I am a fourth-year medical student attending
I think that’s true everywhere and in every walk of life. I’ve certainly come across med students in DC who scared me (and even one resident), and my sister tells me that her nursing class in Charlotte was similarly divided.
No matter how good a school is, a student can only get out of it what they’re willing to work for. And if a school is willing to give people a chance to prove themselves, then sometimes there are going to be some bad eggs.
ps: Hi Mom!
very good post…see you soon in Dominica.
Hi Kendra,
I think you are right! =) See you soon in January!
All the best on your final!
Hey Kendra! Another excelent post. I have long suspected that the most vocal complainers on the forums are just bitter kids who lack perspective. I guess there will always be the bad apples. I am looking forward to joining you on the Nature Island in January. I hope to pick your brain regarding the study habits you employ to keep up to snuff.
Kindest regards,
Thomas
Too true. Ross does not suck, Ross is an awesome opportunity.
Kendra,
You rock.. Thank you for answering all of my questions. I really want to attend ROSS, I would also call it an Honor and if accepted would be my greatest life achievement.
anyways. thanks Kendra.
What is wrong with you people? Not only are you in denial but you are also praising this school like it’s your only opportunity to be an MD. No, not every bitter student lack perspective and not every bitter student is a fail-out. Mostly, not every school has its problem including US school. This school is about money and money ONLY. They take your money and spend it on themselves not you and not you education. We’re losing more hospitals than we gain and yet they’re increasing enrollment. WE are currently bottle necking in clinicals and nothing has been done to relieve that issue. If any of you ever worked at a retail job you’d know that the customer is always right. Here at Ross they don’t give a flying crap about their customers. Stop being naive and open up your eyes. There is nothing good about this place and of course you’ll get in because they accept everyone even male pornstars. It takes alot for them to reject you. And the match list that you see it is awesome because students worked hard and achieved Ross has nothing to do with it.
my Biology Professor told me DO NOT EVER think about going to a Caribbean med school … Didn’t know why he hated it so much , until I heard stories and saw the kind of people who get into those schools … no offence to the good and hard working students ..one of my classmates who was getting D’s and C’s in Organic Chem is in Ross now , I am sure he is one of those who is complaining , I feel bad for those who really put the effort to be a great doctor and have to hear those complains.. for sure med school is not a joke and I do agree A med school might not make you a good doctor , but it can for sure make you or brake you when it comes to the residencies , so if you are academically a strong student don’t waste your money here ….
