Ultra High Temperature Processed Milk Does a Body Good

Long shelf life milk I’ve been drinking the local milk for the past few days, and although it first tasted pretty strange, it’s starting to grow on me. I did some research today to figure out how milk can sit in a box on an unrefrigerated shelf for months and not go bad. To keep milk good for a while, it must undergo a process called Ultra High Temperature Processing or UHT. The process of UHT involves heating milk (or other liquids) to a very high temperature for a very short period of time. This flash heating procedure kills all bacteria or other microorganisms. The milk is then put in an aseptic box, which prevents anything from growing inside of it.

Apparently, UHT milk is very big in Europe and McDonalds all around the world use this stuff in their McFlurries. I don’t mind the taste of it when it’s in my cereal or coffee, but I can’t yet bring myself to drink it by itself. Maybe I can find some UHT ice cream. Now that would be yummy.
